How the verification hold works
Testament cannot be unlocked the moment someone claims a death has occurred. Here is what happens first.
- Day 0Death detected
SSN matched against deceased verification registry. Multi-field confirmation: legal name, date of birth, and state of residence verified simultaneously.
- Day 0Owner notified
An SMS and email are sent to the vault owner immediately. If the owner is alive and receives this in error, they can cancel the unlock with one tap. The window remains open for 72 hours.
- Day 1–372-hour hold active
No vault contents are accessible during this period. The hold exists to prevent fraudulent or premature releases. The owner retains full abort capability throughout.
- Day 3Vault released
If no abort is received, the vault unlocks and each beneficiary receives access only to the assets assigned to them.
If you receive a Testament notification and the owner is alive, call 1-800-TESTAMENT immediately or click the abort link in the notification email. The hold will be cancelled and the vault will remain locked.
This hold mechanic means Testament cannot be weaponized by a fraudulent claim. It is your protection as an owner — and your family's protection as beneficiaries.
